Kids Can Check Out Their Own Digital Library

In 2010, the Port Jefferson Free Library and local public libraries of Suffolk County collaborated to create the digital branch, Live-brary.com, to provide patrons with a selection of free online resources including downloadable eBooks, audio books, movies and music, as well as the databases that have long been available on line.  This month, Live-brary.com for Kids was created to offer our younger patrons a product geared directly towards them.

The website highlights new items available for borrowing, a kid-friendly Topics Guide with fun facts and resources, and music, movies, and books to enjoy on computers, mobile devices, eReaders and more.  One service that is sure to get lots of use is the Disney Books Online link.  With just a click of the mouse, and the patron’s library card barcode, over 650 Disney titles are available to be viewed on a Windows or Mac computer virtually instantly.  Each patron can check out up to 5 titles at a time for 7 days.  The “Read to Me” component, as well as the Dictionary and Trivia features should ensure that this is a popular destination for summer reading.

Just in time for final exams and Regents tests, Live-library.com for Kids includes a Homework Help section, featuring BrainFuse, through which students can interact with live tutors in math, science, reading/writing, social studies, PSAT/SAT, ACT, AP and state standardized tests Monday – Sunday 2:00 PM – 11:00 PM.  Students can view or create their own flash cards to study, upload essays to be critiqued before handing in, or brush up on skills with the live tutor. In addition, an online encyclopedia provides children with valuable research tools and up-to-the-minute data.

So, check out the new digital branch, or stop in to the Library and see what’s new today.
