Good Things Sometimes Come in BIG Packages!

This year, the Children’s Department decided to do something a little different to celebrate the Holidays.  Rather than exchanging gifts, we chose to donate the money we would have spent on gifts for each other to Heifer International.  Heifer International is a nonprofit, humanitarian organization dedicated to ending hunger and poverty and caring for the earth.  Through the generosity of the Children’s Room staff, as well as other staff members who joined us, we were able to purchase a water buffalo for a family in a Third World country.  A family with a water buffalo can plant FOUR TIMES more crops because they can sow a field in days that once took weeks to plow by hand.  Plus, a water buffalo provides fresh milk – a dependable source of nutrition and income to put toward clothing, medicine and education.  A quote from a Thai farmer was included in the Thank You note we received from Heifer, “If I die, my family will weep for me, if my water buffalo dies, my family will starve.”
Recipients also agree to Pass on the Gift of one or more of their animals’ offspring and training to others in need, creating an ever-widening circle of hope. We were so glad to contribute to such a good cause and hope to repeat this project next year.
